A Bavarian king
Otto of Bavaria becomes the first King of Greece, bringing Bavarian specialists - and a taste for beer - to a wine-drinking nation.
1840
First breweries
Greece's first manual breweries open in Athens. Among the founding Bavarian brewers, the Melcher name is listed first.
1850
An apprentice arrives
Ioannis Fix (Fuchs) arrives in Greece and learns the craft of brewing as an apprentice at the Melcher brewery.
1866
The legacy passes on
Fix buys the brewery from Melcher's heirs. From those roots grows FIX - the first great industrial brewery of Greece.
Today
A name that endures
Nearly two centuries on, the Melcher name remains part of Greece's hospitality story.
